The Old Testament has a total of 39 books, which are arranged chronologically. However, the Tanakh only contains 24 books and is the Hebrew equivalent to the Christian Bible. The reason for this discrepancy is that 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel are combined into one book in the Tanakh, and King 1 and 2 are combined into Chronicles.

The Tanakh, or Hebrew Bible, is an acronym composed of the titles of the three sections in the text: Torah, Neviʾim, and Ketuvim.
